Not surprisingly effective pest control is rarely simple. One person’s pest may be another’s pet or at least interest. So tread carefully! Below we explain why pest control should be part of your carefully managed property maintenance checklist.
One of the most common problems in older properties, typical of those in Bath and Bristol, are rats. They travel along sewers and drains, entering into house basements under the floorboards and traverse though wall cavities and the like. Their scrabbling around is frequently unnerving, while urine and corpses can lead to long lingering foul smells. However, they are far from the only pests that may be invading your property. Other typical pests can include flies, birds, bats, badgers, foxes and moths. All bringing their own issues.
For those affected, all too often there is an expectation that the managing agent can magically make the problem disappear; it is, unfortunately, rarely that simple. Here are some guidelines on handling problems in your property:
- it is important to check whether the ‘pest’ is in fact legally protected, as are badgers and bats. Inappropriate disturbance can lead to heavy fines or worse. Check carefully the status of your problem creatures.
- if you are seeking to rid a premise of some form of infestation then make sure the means are legal, safe and where possible humane. You will not be popular if you are responsible for the mass slaughter of the local moggy community, and indeed you could well be breaching legislation. Seagulls and pigeons are often dissuaded by spikes or roof netting, but again such devices often require planning permission.
- simply ridding a property of pests is unlikely to be permanent if the initial causes are not addressed, so make sure things such as waste food is not left around, and access routes are closed off. Adding the above to your property maintenance checklist will allow you to really take control of the problem.
